In quest of sunshine

I am a complicated girl, fond of the smallest gorgeous details and gestures, liking the beauty in everything.

Don’t you know

That I like to keep very busy because being busy helps keep my depression at bay?

And no, I don’t want to cook. Especially when we have to wash ALL of the pots and pans in the utility sink in the garage.

The house is dirty- yes, but everyone leaves their shit everywhere, don’t they? I cannot tell you how many misplaced sandals I stumble upon or how many walked-out-of-them-and-left-there pairs of shorts (with the underwear still nestled inside) I have walked over, or picked up, or how many drawers and cabinet doors are left open on a regular basis.

You did not marry a “housewife”. Just in case you hadn’t noticed.

just a friendly reminder that for over a hundred years, pit bulls used to be referred to as “the nanny dog” and their main job was as babysitters.

 • in temperance tests (the equivalent of how many times your kid can poke your dog in the eye before it bites him) of all breeds the most tolerant was the golden retriever. the second most tolerant was the pit bull. temperament evaluations by the american temperament test society give american pit bull terriers a very high passing rate of 82.6%, while the average passing rate for the other 121 dog breeds tested was only 77%.
 • pit bulls are not naturally human aggressive. in fact pit bull puppies prefer human company to their mother’s two weeks before all other dogs.
 • no spayed/neutered, indoor pit bull has ever killed a person.
 • contrary to the popular myth, pit bulls DO NOT have locking jaws.
 • approximately 6000 pit bulls are put to death every day, by far the highest number of any breed euthanized.

This message is so important.

I’ve never met a pitbull that wasn’t adorable and affectionate, and I know quite a few.

Counselor

I started working as a sort of counselor with a little boy today.

I worked toward this for a few months.

I thought long and hard about the commitment, always with the thought that I HAD to commit if I was going to do this, because I didn’t want to disappoint a child if I couldn’t follow through.

I thought of protecting whatever kid I ended up working with.

I forgot to protect myself. my tendency to get emotionally attached to people. Am I going to hurt when I can’t see this boy any more during the summer? Or what if I end up talking with him next year too… then he goes to middle school.. and I cannot have any contact with him outside of school… Am I going to feel like he’s my own child? Will I miss him? Will I be heartbroken?

Yeah, Probably.

I am an idiot.

If grandmothers around the world had a rallying cry, it would probably sound something like “You need to eat!”

Photographer Gabriele Galimberti’s grandmother said something similar to him before one of his many globetrotting work trips. To ensure he had at least one good meal, she prepared for him a dish of ravioli before he departed on one of his adventures.

“In that occasion I said to my grandma ‘You know, Grandma, there are many other grandmas around the world and most of them are really good cooks,” Galimberti wrote via email. “I’m going to meet them and ask them to cook for me so I can show you that you don’t have to be worried for me and the food that I will eat!’ This is the way my project was born!”

The project, “Delicatessen With Love”, took Galimberti to 58 countries where he photographed grandmothers with both the ingredients and finished signature dishes.

He acted as photographer and stylist during each shoot with the grandmothers, taking a portrait of both the women and the food they made for him.

From top to bottom:

Inara Runtule, 68, Kekava, Latvia. Silke €(herring with potatoes and cottage cheese).

Grace Estibero, 82, Mumbai, India. Chicken vindaloo.

Susann Soresen, 81, Homer, Alaska. Moose steak.

Serette Charles, 63, Saint-Jean du Sud, Haiti. Lambi in creole sauce.

The photographer’s grandmother Marisa Batini, 80, Castiglion Fiorentino, Italy. Swiss chard and ricotta Ravioli with meat sauce.

Normita Sambu Arap, 65, Oltepessi (Masaai Mara), Kenya. Mboga and orgali (white corn polenta with vegetables and goat).

Julia Enaigua, 71, La Paz, Bolivia. Queso Humacha (vegetables and fresh cheese soup).

Fifi Makhmer, 62, Cairo, Egypt. Kuoshry (pasta, rice and legumes pie).

Isolina Perez De Vargas, 83, Mendoza, Argentina. Asado criollo (mixed meats barbecue).

Bisrat Melake, 60, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Enjera with curry and vegetables.

Yesterday: 19 were shot & wounded at Mother’s Day Parade in New Orleans. Among the victims were 10-year-olds.
I never quite involve my work with politics just because I did’t feel the kind of entitlement to police upon other countries’ policies — most of the time I listen and share. BUT it drives me NUTS to hear little kids get gunned down at school and at Mother’s Day Parades. Gun control is something I don’t have mixed feelngs about, even though I am no citizen of this country.
I can’t vote (or even be sure that I have rights to stay); but I can draw pictures. So I sat down tonight and drew this. Tell me I’m not crazy.

I love Ms Yao.
